About the Preserve:

The Treanor Preserve is composed of approximately 63 acres of woodlands and fields located in the Highlands District of Tewksbury Township. Previous owners of this large, beautiful parcel, the Treanor family, had kept the property in the farmland preservation program via a woodland management plan. A natural for preservation, it was acquired by TLT with the aid of the New Jersey Conservation Foundation, the Highlands Council, the NJ DEP Green Acres Program, the Township Green Acres and Tewksbury Land Trust Green Acres.

 

The property is accessed from Water Street, a township-designated Scenic Road, in Mountainville (Lebanon, NJ) near the southern terminus of Longview Road.  An old farm road runs uphill south and then eastward from Water Street, then forks southeast and northeast to reach the higher elevations of the property near the eastern boundary. The elevation gain is about 140 feet from Water Street. During the winter, there are clear views of the Hell Mountain escarpment to the east.

 

There are various fields in the middle of the property that contain a mix of natives (e.g., milkweed, warm-season grasses, blackberries, burdocks, etc.) as well as invasive species (phragmites, autumn olives, barberry, multiflora rose, etc.). The challenge, as always, is to continue to remove the unwanted species.

 

Wildlife includes white tail deer, turkeys, foxes, black bear, and numerous bird species.

 

In 2023, a kiosk was installed at the entrance to honor one of TLT’s founders, Ted Koven, and to provide information about the conservation property to the public.
